Magazine ad screenshots - development

Target audience profile

I wanted to create this video to show exactly who my target audience is. I have been inspired by the style that Alessia Cara shows and I have tried to focus my target audience on the same target audience that she has.

Final Magazine Advertisement

This is the final draft of my magazine advertisement. After receiving feedback from my second draft I was given the idea of putting a hand written signature on the page to make a more personal connection to the target audience. I will create a post showing the feedback I was given and with the screenshots of the development of this second ancillary task.

Magazine Advertisement Draft 2

After editing the layout of my magazine advertisement I discovered that I wanted to have the image central. I thought it gave more of a poster type look and made everything look more simplistic creating a more visually pleasing and easier picture to look at.

Magazine Advertisement Draft 1

This is the first draft of my magazine advertisement. Seeing as the reason behind the advertisement was to promote the digipak that I had made I wanted to include a picture of the front page. I have chosen to use the singer in the picture on the advert because it will create synergy with the digipak.

Final Digipak- The back page

This is the back page of my digipak and includes the tracklist and another picture of Katie. I have kept with the same colours and the same font to create synergy all the way through. I tried to make the songs sound as though they were inspiring or to do with how people looked or felt about themselves.

Final Digipak- Inside Page

This is the inside page to my digipak. It features a picture of the singer and a message written by the singer to her fans. I wanted to include this into my digipak as it gives a personal quality to the album and would act as an extra feature to intrigue and engage the target audience. I was inspired to write a motivational message in the album after listening to a woman named Caitlin Moran in a video talking about girls that struggle with how they look. I had also seen looks of posts on social media sites showing girls who were inspiring other girls to feel good about themselves because everyone has things they don't like about themselves. These posts where telling girls that should feel happy about things that they think are different because those things are what makes them unique.

Final Digipak- Front Page

This is the outside front page of my digipak. I wanted to keep it quite simplistic as I have seen other digipak covers that are very crowded and I don't think that they look as effective. I told Katie to look directly at the camera because I feel that in this photo it will really engage the target audience. By having Katie on the front cover it would ensure that more people are likely to pick it up as she is meant to be a well known star. I started off with wanting to have the front look as though it was handwritten to give a more personal touch. After experimenting with different fonts, I found a font called OSTRICH SANS. I thought that it gave a really modern appearance.

Digipak information

After thinking about what should be in my digipak, I have finalized the information inside.

- Singer's name; Abbie Rose
- Album Title; Ordinary Me
- Message Inside;

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PURCHASING MY ALBUM AND FOR SUPPORTING ME AS AN ARTIST. YOU ALL MAKE ME FEEL BETTER IN MYSELF AND MY AIM IS TO GIVE THE SAME LOVE BACK. I WANT TO MAKE EVERYONE FEEL BEAUTIFUL AND REALISE THAT THEY ARE PERFECT IN EVERY WAY. NO ONE HAS FLAWS AND EVERYONE IS UNIQUE IN THEIR OWN SPECIAL WAY. MY DEBUT SINGLE 'SCARS TO YOUR BEAUTIFUL’, WAS MAD EIN HOPE TO INSPIRE PEOPLE TO BELIEVE THAT WHO THEY ARE IS THE BEST PERSON TO BE

 ABBIE ROSE XX

Abbie Rose xx

- Tracklist;
SCARS TO YOUR BEAUTIFUL
ME
YOUNGER DAYS
MAKE UP
BE YOU
ALIVE
HAPPINESS
PROMISES
FOREVER
STAND BY ME
BY MYSELF
ON MY MIND
WHO ARE WE
LIVE AND LAUGH
I have chosen 14 songs for the album as after researching different digipaks quite a lot had around that number of songs. Here I have stuck to a convention. The song names that I have chosen are all made up (apart from scars to your beautiful) and things that could relate to image and feeling good about yourself. The name of my singer is Abbie Rose because both names go well together and it is a simple name. I did not want to have an exotic name because I wanted my target audience to feel a sense of normality and as though they can relate to this girl because she is normal just like everyone else. I chose the title 'Ordinary Me' again to help the target audience relate to the singer and because I didn't want the album title to be too long. Ordinary Me would should to her fans that she is trying to tell them that she is just like them. I chose to write a message inside the CD cover to engage the fans more. It is a lot rarer to buy a CD now because of technology creating free ways of listening to music. This message should be an added extra that might make the target audience actually want to buy the album.

Digipak draft 1

This is a Prezi to show the first draft of my digipak. It is quite basic but shows what I have so far and what I plan to improve on. I have also added the photos of my first draft below.

Friday 21st Coursework deadline Checklist

I have decided to create a checklist that shows what I have left to do and to give me a clear plan of exactly what needs to be finished on Friday. I am filming with Meg tomorrow to complete all the footage for the video.

Digipak ideas

This was a mindmap that I created to help with more ideas for creating a digipak. I want to use a simple format for the overall look of the digipak and I will have a message on the inside from my singer talking to her fans about how they should feel confident in themselves and to say thank you for buying the album. I have tried to think of a name for the album and that is 'Ordinary Me'. I think that this relates well to the idea of the singer portraying the message of being yourself and who you are is okay. Here is a list of ideas that I had for the tracklist: Scars to your beautiful, Me, Younger days, Make up, Be you, Alive, Happiness, Promises, Reality, Forever, Stand by Me, By Myself, On my Mind, Who We Are. These aren't the final song choices but they are just random names that I thought of that linked to the idea of image and feeling beautiful in yourself.

Filming

The final filming that needs to take place is which Meg who plays the storyline character of my video. I have around 3 different parts I need to do with her and these are located in the dining room, the bedroom and a car. I plan to ask for a specific day to film these parts with Meg and will ask them into my video as soon as I get them.

Practice photos for ancillary tasks

This is a post to show the practice photos for the digipak and magazine advertisement. They are very basic photos just to experiment with Katie to see what kind of things I want to put on my ancillary tasks. It will give me a chance to create draft versions with them.

I experimented with medium portrait and landscape shots as my idea was to zoom in closer on the face. I took medium shots incase I decided I didn't want just her face in it. I experimented with different poses which will hopefully help when taking the photos for the real version.

Draft 4

I wasn't happy with how my finished video looked as there were too many slow motion shots and I didn't think the story made much sense. Although this wasn't a finalised piece I have completely rearranged some parts of the music video to what I think is a better version. I have also taken on the feedback from my target audience after watching my third draft.

In this video there is a black screen and a long photo of Meg. This is to symbolize footage that I haven't got yet and will be filming with Meg soon.

Feedback from Draft 3

Issy Farmer (17 year old female) - I really like the storyline, but some parts need to be worked on as they can be quite confusing when not explained properly. I like the shots that's you have used and all the angles work really well.

Ryan Scott (17 year old male) - I like the cuts from each clip as they go together well but there could be less slow motion shots. They look good but I think there are too many. The storyline also has a good idea that it is based around.

Amaya Dellar-Moy (18 year old female) - I really like this video as I think the storyline works but a few bits are confusing. The different shots look really nice and the background goes well with the character as it shows a teenage girl in a teenage room.

Daniel Cowley (35 year old male- out of my target audience, but I asked him anyway just to get feed back on the type of shots that I used) - The shots look really good and there are too many slow motion shots but they do actually work quite well. I like the different shots between the two girls as the wall in each of the shots is the same so you can tell they are kind of part of the same thing.

I have learnt from this feedback that I need to go back through my music video and look at what slow motion shots I have and if I can improve on the storyline and what is happening.

Draft 3

This is the third draft that I have created of my music video. I have added the edits of Katie's and Meg's videos together. The reason behind having medium and close up shots of Katie is because I didn't like the look that a long shot gave. It was hard to tell if Katie was lip syncing so I decided to keep with shots that were closer.

Draft 2

Here I have added the videos of Katie together. I have not added them properly to the song but I have shown the best shots from all the footage that I got. Whilst looking through the videos, I wrote down specific times in each video that I thought showed the best shots. I plan to compare the shots that are from the same section of the song to see which one would look the best. Then I will add these to my first draft to create a second draft.

These images show my notes from when I rewatched all the videos that I took with Katie. They will help me when choosing what clips to use in my final music video.

Draft 1

This is the first draft of my music video. I have worked with Meg to create footage that is suitable for the majority of my video. I have added in as much footage as I could to ensure there were no gaps to help me see if I liked how the video looked. I have not filmed the footage with Katie yet and parts that Meg is in may be changed to Katie and the blank parts are where Katie will be lip syncing.
I plan to film with Katie and keep creating more drafts of my music video.
I will ask my target audience what they like and don't like about it and ask for ideas that they would suggest to start filming with Katie.

Meg's character

This is Meg Williams. She is going play the storyline character in my video. She will be portraying a teenage girl who isn't confident in herself and gets dressed up to try and make herself look and feel better. The song talks about how a girl should feel happy in herself and not count on what other people say or make up to make her feel better. I want to portray this message in my video by showing Meg's character realising that she doesn't need make up and that she should just feel happy in herself.

Storyboard for katie

It was difficult to draw a detailed storyboard for the footage that I would be capturing with Katie as each shot would look very similar. Instead I created three main shots that I wanted to look at and will go through each of these shots with the whole song and Katie lip syncing around 2 or 3 times each. Here is my plan:

The Set/ Location

I decided to set my music video in my house. This would create the atmosphere or a normal house and is really easy to access. The main room that I will be using for my video, is my bedroom. Seeing as I am a teenager myself it will create the idea of a normal teenage room to make the video seem more realistic.

Storyboarding

Here are pictures of the story boards that I have created to help me with filming with Meg for my music video. I plan to create another storyboard similar to these ones for the filming that I plan to do with Katie. In year 11 I had to create a music video and without story boarding it was very hard to decide what I wanted to do on the spot. I have learnt from that and now have decided to really plan out everything that I want to do.

Wednesday 1 March 2017

My plan

As I have changed my idea I though that it would be appropriate to use the 'hair' videos I had created as practice videos. This means practicing with my cast, with the camera, lighting and with editing. This will allow me to plan out exactly what I want to film for my actual video. When working
with Meg I realized that it was really easy to say exactly what I wanted her to do. We worked well together as Meg found it quite a fun experience. Next time, I will do exactly what I did before but do a little more planning for the shots that I want. Although I had created a storyboard and planned out with meg before hand what I wanted her to do, during the process we both thought of quite a lot of new or better ideas. This was really useful as Meg is also a part of my target audience, so this way I knew exactly what she wanted in the video which would have acted as what my part of my target audience would have wanted in the video.

I have created a plan for the next couple of posts and I want to start filming for my new idea

- Post Little Mix videos- explain the shots I used and which ones I liked and which ones I didn't like

- Introduce my new character- Katie and Meg have two different characters. Katie is the singer and Meg is just an actress in the video. Take shots of Katie for Digipak and magazine advertisement

- Video Analysis of Haillee Steinfeld's song 'Starving'- focusing more on the target audience this time

- Video Analysis of Hair by Little Mix - talking about the shots that I like and what parts inspire me

- Storyboard for my new song

- A target audience video. Asking someone who is in my target audience questions about my new character and the sort of music that they like - video

- Filming Schedule, when I am filming with meg and when I am filming with Katie, these can both be at separate times as they are not in the video together

- Footage for my new video- A practice run of editing the footage together

About Alessia Cara

Incase the link doesn't work:

The lyrics and why I chose my new song

Here is an image of the work I did when looking at the lyrics. I wanted to focus on finding different ideas for each lyric as I wanted the video to link to some of the words. The song is about a girl who doesn't think that she is worth anything. I want to portray this at the start of my video and then gradually as the video goes on showing her feeling more confident about herself.

Here is a copy of the lyrics:

"Scars To Your Beautiful"
She just wants to be beautiful
She goes unnoticed, she knows no limits,
She craves attention, she praises an image,
She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor
Oh she don't see the light that's shining
Deeper than the eyes can find it
Maybe we have made her blind
So she tries to cover up her pain, and cut her woes away
'Cause covergirls don't cry after their face is made

But there's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark
You should know you're beautiful just the way you are
And you don't have to change a thing
The world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful
Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
And you don't have to change a thing
The world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

She has dreams to be an envy, so she's starving
You know, "Covergirls eat nothing."
She says, "Beauty is pain and there's beauty in everything."
"What's a little bit of hunger?"
"I could go a little while longer," she fades away
She don't see her perfect, she don't understand she's worth it
Or that beauty goes deeper than the surface
Ah oh, ah ah oh,
So to all the girls that's hurting
Let me be your mirror, help you see a little bit clearer
The light that shines within

There's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark
You should know you're beautiful just the way you are
And you don't have to change a thing
The world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
And you don't have to change a thing
The world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

No better you than the you that you are
(no better you than the you that you are)
No better life than the life we're living
(no better life than the life we're living)
No better time for your shine, you're a star
(no better time for your shine, you're a star)
Oh, you're beautiful, oh, you're beautiful

There's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark
You should know you're beautiful just the way you are
And you don't have to change a thing
The world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful
Whoa-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
And you don't have to change a thing
The world could change its heart
No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

I chose this song because I could potentially only have two people in it; the singer and the one with the storyline. It is also a much slower song so it will allow me to experiment more with editing. I feel that the song will have a lot more meaning to it than 'Hair' did and I feel a lot more confident with it.

My change of idea

Organising 5 different people at once was very difficult so I completely changed my plan of action. In this audio I am explaining my change of idea and how I wish to improve on my work.

Video Analysis- Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk

I discovered that a main aspect in this video was the sexualizing of women. At the beginning the opening shot was of a woman's legs. Throughout this video you do not see the women's faces apart from one woman in the salon but she is not seen as a sexual object because she is not desired by the other male characters. Another thing that I learnt, was that using both narrative and performance work really well together. This has inspired me to use both in my own video.

Organisation

I have asked each member to say when they are free and I have explored briefly into what I would like them to wear. On Monday 23rd January, the girls and I will be going out for a meal. I thought that this would be the perfect situation for me to begin filming. We will be going to 'Nandos' and I will ask for permission to film. I will post another plan for exactly what I plan to do.

Tuesday 17 January 2017

Beginning the process of filming...

The idea of filming to me to very overwhelming. I have a fear that the video will ultimately look very cheesy and unrealistic. As soon as I begin filming I will know if I work well with my cast and if I know exactly what I am doing. As I am feeling slightly worried about my music video at the minute, my plan to get over this is to create a clear plan for my storyboard and to make sure I know exactly what I am doing and what I want my girl band to do.

Next Steps

My plan is to finish storyboarding my idea in more detail and to create a practice version of my video. I need to organize all four members of the band to decide on specific dates to start filming. I plan to give each of them a letter to explain what I would like them to wear. I want them to all co ordinate in some way but I have no properly decided what I would like them to wear yet. The letter will be along the lines of...

Thank you for agreeing to be in my music video. Your character is a woman aged ____ and named
______________________. Her personality is ________________ and I would like you to wear _________________________________________________________________________________

The letter will be different for each girl as they have different characters and personalities to portray through their movements and what they are wearing.

My Idea

This is a video to show a brief look at my main idea.

Focus Group Feedback

When watching the video of my focus group back, I had a list of things that I would change if I were to do it again. I would definitely change the age group as I had 11-12 year olds but my target audience is 14 and above. The girls were very helpful when it came to talking about colours and poses, but weren't very talkative when I asked questions about the video itself. When I asked if they had any ideas for what would look good in a music video, they didn't really respond. I learnt from this that older students or more mature students would be better to ask. I also thought that it would be a good idea to ask media students. They may have a completely different idea to what I have and their answer will be more mature and rounded off. I learnt from my focus group that for their age they would prefer bright colours and girly things. Knowing this, I want to produce photos that maybe have a more sophisticated or darker look and then ask people in my target audience range if they like this or prefer it quite girly like the younger girls.

Photoshoot Ideas

This is a picture of my photo shoot ideas.

Lyrics

These are pictures of the lyric sheets that I gave to each of my actors. I wanted to make sure that they had an idea of what part of the song they would be lip syncing too. This may change throughout the video but I plan to keep them around the same.
